Metropolitan Broadcasting Ltd. was granted a licence to operate an FM station at Regina. William Stewart, head of Metropolitan and a former Winnipeg broadcaster, found there were high FM set sales in Regina but it was the largest city in Canada to not have an FM station. He felt it was time to change that.
CFMQ-FM signed on the air on February 4. It broadcast on a frequency of 102.1 MHz with effective radiated power of 5,900 watts. Eight hours of each day were devoted to stereo broadcasting.
Marvin Chase was appointed sales manager. B.R. (Bob) Hill was manager.
Studios and offices were in the Northgate Mall.
On November 5, Metropolitan Broadcasters Ltd. was given approval to change the studio location for CFMQ-FM from the Northgate Shopping Mall to 19th Avenue and Robinson Street in Regina.
On October 1, CFMQ-FM 92.1 was authorized to increase effective radiated power from 5,900 to 6,200 watts, increase antenna height from 123 to 152.5 feet, and move to a new transmitter site. CFMQ would continue to operate with a non-directional pattern.
On March 14, Dolores A. Lockhart, Morley G. Lockhart and George G. Gallagher were authorized to acquire Metropolitan Broadcasting Ltd.
On May 31, Buffalo Broadcasting Co. Ltd., owner of CKRM 980, was granted approval to purchase CFMQ-FM from Metropolitan Bcng Ltd.
CFMQ received permission to increase effective radiated power from 6,200 watts to 100,000 watts and to change the transmitter site.
CFMQ increased power to 100,000 watts using a new transmitter site.
On March 1. Harvard Developments Ltd. (controlled by the Hill family of Regina), bought CFMQ-FM and CKRM-AM from Buffalo Broadcasting. Harvard owned CKCK-TV at this time. They had acquired the TV station in 1977 from Armadale Communications.
CFMQ announcer Ernie Steeves was named music director.
On January 11, the CRTC renewed CFMQ-FM's licence until September 30, 1985.
CFMQ changed its call sign to CHMX on May 28.
News director Manfred Joehnck moved over to CKCK-TV to become assignment editor.
CHMX-FM received approval to change its format to New Country. Co-Owned CKRM-AM had a Traditional Country format. It was felt the formats would complement each other. A competing application by CKIT-FM for a country format was denied. CHMX put the new format in place on July 11.
Craig Broadcasting Systems entered into an agreement with Harvard Communications (CFMQ and CKRM) to locate the studios of Craig’s CKCK-AM and CFWF-FM in the Harvard building at 2060 Halifax Street. At the same time Harvard agreed to take on the management of CKCK and CFWF.
Perry Nyhus moved from morning to afternoon drive at CHMX Country 92. Tom Brown moved into morning and Shelby Grayson remained as morning co-host. The changes were the result of program director Bill Thomas leaving his air shift. Michael Olstrom promoted to Operations Manager of CFWF / CKCK / CHMX / CKRM.
CHMX was authorized to change the location for its transmitter and to increase antenna height.
The CRTC renewed CHMX-FM's licence on August 27 to August 31, 2008.
On December 12 the CRTC approved an application by Harvard Broadcasting Inc. to effect an intracorporate reorganization. Harvard was the licensee of the radio programming undertakings CKRM, CFWF-FM and CHMX-FM Regina, and the radio network Roughriders. The proposed transaction would be implemented through the insertion of a new holding company, The Gabriel Holding Corp., into the existing corporate structure, between Famhill Holdings Limited and Famhill Investments Limited. As a result of this transaction, Famhill Holdings would own 100% of the Class E voting shares and the Class D non-voting shares, and the Paul Hill Family Trust would own 100% of the Class B non-voting participating shares in Gabriel Holding. This transaction would not change the control of Harvard, which remained with Frederick W. Hill, through the holding companies Harvard Developments Inc., Famhill Holdings and Famhill Investments.
The new Lite 92 FM Program Director was Greg Morgan, the five-year morning host. It was an add-on responsibility for Morgan who continued doing mornings.
On June 30, the CRTC renewed the broadcasting licence for the English-language commercial radio station CHMX-FM Regina from 1 July 2010 to 31 August 2013. This short-term licence renewal will enable the Commission to review the licensee's compliance with the Radio Regulations, 1986 at an earlier date. In Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2009-786, the Commission noted that the licensee may have failed to comply with section 9(2) of the Radio Regulations, 1986, which relates to the provision of annual returns, for the 2007 and 2008 broadcast years.
Lite 92 FM Music Director and afternoon drive announcer Trent Allen was promoted to Program Director at sister station Mix 103.7 Fort McMurray.
Angie Norton became the new Business Manager for Harvard's Regina and Yorkton stations.
In the summer, Harvard Broadcasting introduced Regina's Newest FM Radio Station - MY92.1! The city's "official at work" radio station had an Adult Contemporary format and played "all the songs that make you feel good!" MY92.1 was going after 25-54 year old adults. Chris Knight and Twylla West handled the morning show (5:30 to 10:00). John Tesh was on the air from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Greg Morgan handled the drive home (2:00 to 6:00 p.m.). Matt James was on the air from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Weekends: the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club, Dave Mitchell in the Afternoon's, The Saturday Night All 80's Show and Sunday Morning Brunch with the Oldies Starring Donny Osmond.
Michael Olstrom left Harvard Broadcasting as station group manager to become general manager of Astral Radio Regina as of February 15. Olstrom had held his post with Harvard since January 1, 2002 when John Huschi retired. Jason Huschi was promoted from his general manager/general sales manager position at MIX 103 FM Fort McMurray to general manager of Harvard's Regina cluster. He succeeded Michael Olstrom in that position and, prior to that, his father, John Huschi. Grant Biebrick, program director at CKLM Lloydminster moved to The Wolf/CKRM March 28 as PD, succeeding the retiring Willy Cole.
The CRTC approved the change to the effective control of Harvard Broadcasting Inc. from Frederick W. Hill to Paul J. Hill following the death of Frederick W. Hill in July 2008. Harvard was the licensee of radio stations and the parent company of two other licensees of radio stations in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
