On September 15, the CRTC approved an application by Blackgold Broadcasting Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate an English-language commercial FM radio station to serve Spruce Grove and Stony Plain. Blackgold was equally owned by Mr. and Mrs. Tamagi. The station would operate on 88.1 MHz (channel 201A) with an effective radiated power of 500 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of 43 metres) and offer a country music format. The target audience would be 25-54 year olds. It would offer 126 hours of local programming per broadcast week.
CKSS-FM began on-air testing in May and officially launched as 88.1 The One at 8:01 a.m., June 4 with Rock This Country by Shania Twain.
On July 20, the CRTC approved an application by Blackgold Radio Inc. for authority to acquire from Blackgold Broadcasting Inc., as part of a corporate reorganization, the assets of CKSS-FM Stony Plain/Spruce Grove and CKPA-FM Ponoka. Blackgold Radio was owned by Mark S. Tamagi (57%) and Robin Curtis-Tamagi (43%), and effectively controlled by Tamagi. The applicant stated that the acquisition of assets occurred on September 1, 2016.
