On January 22, the CRTC denied an application by Gill Broadcasting Ltd. to operate an ethnic commercial FM radio station in Winnipeg. The station would have operated at 92.9 MHz (channel 225A) with an effective radiated power of 1,800 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of 55.9 metres). Given the limited revenue growth of the existing ethnic radio station CKJS and the modest Hindi/Punjabi and Tagalog populations in Winnipeg, the Commission found that the Winnipeg radio market would be highly challenged to sustain an additional ethnic station at this time.

2016

On May 26, CKYZ (known as AWAZ) began testing on 92.9 MHz with ERP of 50 watts, the frequency vacated by Red River College in 2012. With no licence from the CRTC, it was assumed the station had special authority to operate, from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

2017

In November, CKJS 810 received approval to convert to the FM band, using the 92.7 frequency. As a result, CKYZ had to seek a new frequency as it was using the unprotected adjacent channel of 92.9 MHz.

2018

In March, CKYZ moved from 92.9 to 96.9 MHz to make way for CKJS 810’s move from AM to FM at 92.7 MHz.
