In January 10th 2013, CTV President of Programming and Sports, Phil King, announced that the network had ordered thirteen one-hour episodes of a new police drama, with the working title of Played.
The premise involved following the work of an undercover police unit to be called the Covert Investigations Unit (CIU), and would feature an ensemble cast that was still to be announced.
"'Played' is a suspenseful, adrenaline-filled ride," said Phil King in a prepared release. "This ensemble series will show viewers a gritty and modern take on the gruelling life of undercover cops."
Played, which was created by Greg Nelson and produced by Muse Entertainment Enterprises and Back Alley Film Productions in association with Bell Media, was s began production in Toronto in the spring of 2013.
The program debuted on CTV at 10 pm on Thursday October 3rd 2013. It starred Vincent Walsh as Detective John Moreland, and Chandra West as his unit boss Rebecca.
The series was not renewed for the 2014-15 season.
